The Cumming Harvest - Closed:  This Week at The Cumming Harvest

THIS WEEK…Flowers – Squash – Tomatoes – Berries!

Happy Independence Day to everyone out there! Today is the day we celebrate our independence from the tyranny of a king, but it’s also a great occasion to think about our independence from all sorts of things. Your support of The Cumming Harvest greatly helps the cause of food independence for our community, for starters. Did you know that, on average, American farmer receives only nine cents out of every dollar that gets spent on food? By the time you take out the cut of the processors, the distributors, the wholesalers, and so forth, only 9% is left for the farm. And of course, they’ve got to try to meet all of the expenses of running a farm with that money, and pretty much the only way to do that is by consolidating the farmland into huge “corporate” farms that can get by with the economies of scale. The farms might be independent family-owned enterprises on paper, but they’re beholden to all of those other interests that control the other 91% of the food dollar. Here at The Cumming Harvest, the growers keep 90% of every dollar, turning small, truly family owned and operated farms into viable businesses. That fosters variety for you, provides a sustainable use of the area’s green space, and helps us to be a more self-reliant community.

For you, too, these growers and their products let you become independent from the corporate grocer, who is told by the corporate office in Cincinnati or Bentonville or Asheville what they can and can’t stock and who they can source their produce from. You’re given the freedom to choose who grows and produces your food and how they grow and produce it. If you don’t like one grower’s products or methods, you have others, all located right here, to choose from.

And of course by sourcing your food so close to home, you don’t have to be reliant on an overtaxed and under-vigilant inspection system to make sure your food is safe. The Federal government is actively trying to reduce your ability to choose where your food comes from in the name of safety, so not everything is rosy. Our fight for independence is an ongoing one, and your voice in support of the small local producer does get heard.

Carrell Farms and Buffalo Gal are on vacation this week.

Tullahoma Locally Grown:  Order Made-to-Order Bread before Your Market Closes at NOON Today

Good morning.

We sure have received enough rain for a while. Of course, more is expected today. Do not let the rain get you down. Lift your spirits with made-to-order bakery items such as a loaf of English Breakfast Toasting Bread or a half-dozen Jumbo Pretzel Rolls. Both of these breads are made from scratch on market day.

Now is a great time to order meat for your weekend cookouts and other items you need for next week. You can order bread, eggs, milk, vegetables, herbs, meat, candles, freshly roasted coffee, and more.

Your local market closes at noon today (Wednesday). Order now before your favorite items run out.

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Reminder

ALFN Members,

Remember to make your order on the market before it closes on Wednesday at noon. You don’t want to miss those sun-ripened tomatoes!

Also, don’t forget the Southern Center for Agroecology will have its first workshop on canning this Thursday at the Church. You can sign-up here: Canning Workshop

Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 farm, week of July 3 2016

There will be U-pick raspberries and currants this week. These berry crops are bountiful this year. We’ll also have some pre-picked if you are in a rush. Currants make a wonderful jam or cordial, high in nutrition.

Regular crops: kale, beet tops, chard, green onions, green garlic, arugula, parsley and tomatoes. Should have yellow zuchini next week.

I went to Bob Bratina’s townhall meeting on climatechange today. A bigger than expected turnout made it clear that if you are informed about climate change, you have every reason to be alarmed. Bob is the Liberal MP for Stoney Creek, former mayor and a sports broadcaster before that. He gets it. But he like most every other politician has NO IDEA how to lead the country through a crisis the likes of which no one has ever experienced, even world war. We heard several pleas that the feds take this climate thing as seriously as we would another world war. Bob was at loss of how to proceed, and yet he gets it that building more oil infrastructure is foolish if to keep below 2degC we have to leave 80% of the carbon fuels in the ground. He gets it that building car-centric cities and burbs is foolish when transportation in the Hammer contributes more than a quarter of all GHG pollution. He gets that the people have to wake up and take responsibility for personal decisions that consume oil and produce carbon. I can hardly blame him for now knowing how to navigate into a future we can only dread if we stay the ‘business as usual’ course.
You and I and our friends and relations have to get with the program: get informed, take to heart we live in the age of limits, care enough for younger generations to forgo consumption pleasures etc now.

Yalaha, FL:  July 5 through 7 ordering

Didn’t get the market open at the normal time. There isn’t a whole lot available this time of year, I almost didn’t open this week.

Stones River Market:  IMPORTANT!

Hello valued customers!

We need to remind folks that if you order, you MUST pick it up on Wednesday or make immediate arrangements to get your things as soon as possible.
Our farm is not equipped to handle excess produce and cannot guarantee the quality of items not picked up. Our farmers responsibility ends when they drop your items off. Ashleigh and I are volunteers of the market and have a farm and family to also attend to. WE LOVE the market, but want it to flourish and not suffer due to the market having to pay farmers for items ordered and not picked up.

Everyone completely understands the occasional forget and there is always a measure of grace that is extended to managers, customers and farmers. We are all human.

However, if you order and don’t pick up, be advised that you will be charged for your purchase via a square invoice emailed to you. You must pay that even if you never pick up your items.

Thank you for your continued support and for respecting our wonderful market and it’s producers.

Sincerely,
Tracey Burks

Hope Every one had a safe and Happy 4th of July.

Items listed at “0” include some of the berries. Other items possible, but not listed would include green beans. Forest Run Farm has spotted a yellow and red cherry tomato, so hoping the warm weather we’ll be getting will nudge them along as well.
