Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

Well it appears summer is here. As a person who grew up in Nevada, I am always amazed at the weather here in Western Kentucky. Don’t get me wrong, I really love the fact that we have green fields and trees most of the year, but the weather changes really throw me. In Nevada, storms come from one direction – the west. Here you never know which direction to plan for. Thank goodness we have the weatherman to help us out.
The traditional farmers market is going strong and we hope to see you there too. It is open every Thursday from 4-7pm thru September 15th. Last week we had kids activities brought in by the Art Guild. I hope you will have a chance to stop by and see us there.
See you on Friday,
Angela

Market News

I love how what we have accomplished here in Athens has inspired others far and wide to better the food systems in their own communities. Athens Locally Grown was the world’s first internet farmers market when we started back in 2002, and now there are hundreds. Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the most impressive groups is right next door.

Several years ago, a small group of ALG growers and customers who had been driving to Athens each week from Clayton and other pints north formed their own online market, Northeast Georgia Locally Grown. They now have a thriving network of growers and pickup in three towns. There was a really nice article about how they’ve made eating healthily easier for NE Georgians today in the Gainesville Times, and you can read it here: http://www.gainesvilletimes.com/m/section/199/article/117423/.

One of the events they organize every year is the Georgia Mountain Farm Tour. The 5th annual tour will take place Saturday & Sunday, June 25 & 26, 2016. “With more than a dozen farms and multiple farmtotable restaurants to choose from on the tour, guests can customize their experience by picking the locations they want to visit each day. From pastured animals and historical landmarks to hayrides and honey extracting, everyone will find something that interests them. Passes are only $35 per car ($30 if purchased by June 15!) This is a fun event for families, farmers, backyard gardeners, and local food lovers. Proceeds support the projects of Georgia Mountains Farmers Network. For all the details and to order passes, visit EatWellBuyLocal.org

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and Wednesdays from 11am-2pm in the atrium at St. Mary’s Hospital. They have a website too. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The Oconee County Farmers Market is open on Saturdays in Watkinsville. Their website is www.oconeefarmersmarket.org. Washington, GA also has a lovely little Saturday market, running from 9-1. You can learn all about them here: www.washingtonfarmersmkt.com. If you know of any other area markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Recipes

Kohlrabi Bistro Salad
from thekitchn.com

Serves 4
Splash white vinegar
4 large eggs
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 tablespoon minced shallot
1 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons chopped fresh tarragon
1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste
6 cups peeled and julienne-cut kohlrabi
1 head Belgian endive, cut into bias strips
4 strips thick-cut bacon, cooked and crumbled

Bring several inches of water plus a splash of white vinegar to a boil over high heat in a wide sauté pan or deep skillet. Crack eggs one at a time into a small ramekin and then slide into the water. Keep an eye on the boil/simmer of the water. The temperature of the water should drop from the cold eggs. When it comes back up to a simmer, reduce the heat to maintain a very gentle simmer. If the water is boiling, reduce heat. Cook eggs 4 minutes for runny yolks. Remove from the water with a slotted spoon to a plate lined with a clean towel.

Meanwhile, whisk cider vinegar, shallot, and Dijon in a large salad bowl. Whisk in oil, tarragon, salt, and pepper. Add kohlrabi and endive and toss to coat. Divide salad among four dinner plates. Top with crumbled bacon and the hot poached egg.

Market News

Hello!

It is hot out there! Hope you were able to stay cool today – maybe even found a way to play in some water! We are certainly hoping the rain expected for Tuesday does come and provides a nice soaking for the ground as well as cools down the temperatures!
We are definitely in the transition from late spring to early summer. The summer crops are rolling in – squash, cucumbers, and the first tomatoes. The greens and lettuces won’t be around much longer. This is a diverse time of year, crop wise. As the summer heat kicks in, we see less variety of crops and get down to the summer heat loving staples. But for now, please enjoy all that we have to offer. We’ve got a great selection of wonderful vegetables!

If you are interested in peaches from the Peach Truck, but pick up either at the farms or at Westahaven, we can bring an order for you. Please let us know what you would like in the comments section of your order. We will charge your account for you, and deliver the peaches with your order.

The Bloomy Rind is back with us this week. Also, please support our other amazing vendors and providers – Dozen Bakery, Wedge Oak Farm and Bear Creek meats, Tru Bee honey, and Twin Forks Farm nuts and granola. We really are lucky to be working with some of the best food artisans in town!

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday! Thank you so much for all your support!

Dawson Local Harvest:  Breakfast Sausage, Cherry Tomatoes, Last Call for Lettuce!

Dawson Local Harvest for June 17th

Breakfast Sausage, Cherry Tomatoes, and Last Call for Lettuce.

HI EVERYONE!

We mentioned FIVE HENS FARMS last week and they’re in the news again. First off, their very tasty Pork Breakfast Sausage is back in stock. It’s very good and goes pretty fast, so don’t dally if you’re interested. Secondly they have some dated Ham for sale at just $3.00 a pound. They consider this Ham to be for pet consumption because it’s been packaged for a year, but it’s vacuum-sealed and was good last week. Might be a way to get a great deal, or give it to your pets and make them very happy.

LEILANI’S has their first-of-the-season organic-standard Mixed Cherry Tomatoes coming in. Could be 4 pints, could be 6, we’ll fill all the orders we can. This will also be the last week for Lettuce this season, so get it while you can, it’ll be a while for the fresh stuff again. Other New Choices besides the Cherry Tomatoes are young, tender baby Cabbages, Broccoli, Cauliflower, wonderfully tart Onions, Baby Carrots, and Golden and Scarlet Beets, and several other veggies still on the Menu.

More Fresh Wild-caught Georgia White Shrimp straight from the docks of Darien, Ga. will be available from TOM’S AWESOMW SHRIMP. That’s great eatin’!

THE MARKET WILL OPEN Sunday night at 8pm!

REMEMBER! You can order until Tuesday night at 9 pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 7pm.

You’ll find the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST at http://dawsonville.locallygrown.net

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible! We guarantee your satisfaction with all products in the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST.
