No Market Due To the Holiday Weekend.

HI EVERYONE!

Well, Thanksgiving is upon us and due to the Holiday weekend the Dawson Local Harvest will not be open this week. On a personal note Lei and I will be visiting my very elderly parents (90 and 87). I hope you’ll have a similar chance to be with your family and/or those you love and cherish (hoping they are not mutually exclusive).

The Harvest will be open every Friday in December until Christmas week. We’ll have lots of scrumptious goodies for you in December, so look for our email next Sunday.

personal reflections

I have had time these last few days to reflect on memories of past Thanksgivings shared with family and friends. Whether I was cooking in my own kitchen, helping in another or a guest in someone’s home, the happiness that I have felt for the love that is shared on this special holiday still fills my heart with joy!

It isn’t about a “perfect meal” – it can be the simplest of fare or a huge feast. It isn’t about pulling out the silver and the best china or the lace tablecloth. It isn’t about show. It is about gratitude! Expressing our heartfelt thanks to another warms their heart and ours.

I give thanks to God for my many blessings and even for the “I’m-not-so-sure-this-is-a-blessing” situations and especially the hardships, losses, issues that I face that are less than pleasant. I am truly grateful for all of the joys and sorrows that became my life. They are part of me and have shaped the person that I am today. I am grateful to Him for His faithfulness and love; that I awaken each day to see the beautiful sunrise; grateful at the end of the day as the sky is painted at sunset and the stars adorn the heavens! He blesses me each and every moment – through His hand and the lives of each person I encounter. I am humbled and grateful to be touched!


Please, take a moment and reflect on the many blessings you have in your life. Live ‘in the moment’ and become ‘aware’! Take the time to say: “Thank you!” I promise, it will bring joy to your heart!


Black Lab Update Although I miss him greatly, Dudley is enjoying his time with my brother Michael and his wife Karen and their Brittany Spaniel, Doyle! He has a fenced yard to play in and Michael has access to several hundred acres of woods and pastures which they visit everyday! The Black Lab runs and runs and recently has chased a Buck and a Coyote, much to Michael’s consternation and dismay. The Black Lab, who Michael assures me is more “hound” than Lab does come when he is called, so Michael feels comfortable in allowing him to run! Dudley has bonded well with Karen, Michael and Doyle and I am thankful that they offered to care for him until I am in a better living situation! My only fear is that they will become so attached it will be painful for them to let him come home. (Sigh…we will cross that bridge when we get to it!) In the meantime, he is well-loved and we are both blessed by Karen and Michael’s willingness to care for him until I can bring him home.

Lamb is rather a ‘seasonal’ meat as Farmers usually process in the late Fall and then again in Spring! So, if you are interested in having Lamb over the Winter, now is the perfect time to purchase!


Dabrielle and Bruce of My Daily Bread will be taking a short vacation next week and will not be at Market! Be sure and purchase extras this week and freeze to hold you over until the following week! Dabrielle promises that there will be a few surprises on the Farmers Sales Table this week at our Markets! Hosting a Thanksgiving celebration or attending as a guest? Consider the Pecan Cheese Log as your appetizer or as a Hostess Gift! Yeast Rolls, Pumpkin Bread, Sourdough Bread, Spelt Pumpkin Muffins – there is a plethora of items from which to choose!

Hello!

We have a different schedule this week due to Thanksgiving. Get your order in early as we will be closing the Market on Monday evening. Our delivery this week will be Tuesday, same time and place!

We have lots of great items for your Thanksgiving Celebration! Don’t forget about good greens and lettuces for salads! Lots of sweet potatoes, carrots and turnips for a roasted veggie side dish.

The Bloomy Rind has a wonderfully curated selection up with lots of options for putting together your own cheese board, including crackers. Or save your self some brain power and get a pre-assembled cheese tray.
Dozen Bakery has pre-order pies available! Their pumpkin pie and pear custard pie are perfectly made with fresh ingredients, not too sweet with a deliciously buttery crust. If you aren’t into baking, or are feeling overwhelmed with all the cooking, these pies really have a homemade, from scratch feel but will save you a lot of work!

There are some items not available this week due to our different schedule. John is on vacation this week with his family, so please be nice to Tally when you pick up. We’ll be back to our regular schedule next week, and will be continuing weekly through the winter, weather allowing!

This week is a special time, when we gather together and give thanks for the bounty around us. There are so many in this world suffering and searching for a safe place to rest with their family. Please take a minute for yourself to reflect on the love and beauty that surrounds you, and be grateful. Share the warmth in your heart with all those around you, and the world will be a better place for it.

We are so grateful for you, and all of your support. We appreciate every smiling face we see at pick up – Thank you for the effort you make and the trust you put in us! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Welcome to Thanksgiving week and we maintain our regular schedule. There are also plenty of items available this week for a family feast. Regular and new items include:

  • Erdmann Farm brings several varieties of lettuce to accompany his kales, broccoli and cabbage.
  • Flying S Farms has plenty of baked goods including biscuits, cookies, cakes and breads.
  • Frontier Family Farm has brussels sprouts, broccoli and lettuce.
  • Rainbow Hill Farm still has several varieties of apples including Pink Lady and Winesap.
  • Rocky Glade Farm introduces Minutina, Chinese broccoli, Happy Rich florets, broccoli raab and Hinona Kabu turnips this week.
  • White City Produce and Greenhouse still has tomatoes and peppers to go with her greens, turnips and winter squashes.

Don’t forget about Alfresco Pasta for those meals after the Thanksgiving holiday. They have several sauces and pastas on the Market.

Besides turkey, you will also find plenty of beef, pork and chicken from Farrar Farm, Wedge Oak Farm and West Wind Farms.

What a chilly day! Tonight’s lows will affect vegetables. The winter squash is already harvested so we are continuing to make it available online. The other veggies are a wait and see.

Opossum Holllow is taking the week off for Thanksgiving but after visiting with them today I know that lettuce, kale, and spinach are coming back soon! Can’t wait for fresh spinach.

Meats and baked goods are available for purchase and as soon as I know what produce is available this week I will send out an email.

We will have our market pick up next Saturday as usual. It is alo Shop Small Business Saturday so plan to shop with the downtown merchants and enjoy lunch at Fratelli’s, Cafe on Broadway, 28 Springs, Pour Jon’s or Inn at the Springs.

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market Is Open


Thanksgiving week has arrived! By know many of you have received your turkeys from our local growers and have already made preparations for a feast. We will be open this Saturday for post-Thanksgiving foods. You may be stuffed for a day, but we’ll be here when the hunger pains come back. With all the plans for this week, don’t forget to make your orders for the next week. Happy Thanksgiving! The market is open.

Updates

Arkansas Natural Produce will not be delivering this week for Thanksgiving. However, we still have plenty of produce from other growers. We wish all of our growers a happy and restful week!

This week, I would like to leave you with the famous Three Sisters planting technique from the Iroquois who practiced a unique method of agriculture called polyculture. The three sisters were composed of corn, beans and squash. I know many of you are familiar with the Thanksgiving-themed reference. However, studies done at Cornell show the production levels of the three sisters to be better than typical monoculture systems. As you know the nitrogen-fixing pole beans use the stalks of the corn for support and the sprawling squash shades out weeds. The combination of the three plants provides a synergy that is greater than the sum of its parts. I have copied a legend below from the Cornell website that goes into the mythical explanation of the three sisters planting technique.

A Legend

Once upon a time very long ago, there were three sisters who lived together in a field. These sisters were quite different from one another in their size and also in their way of dressing. One of the three was a little sister, so young that she could only crawl at first, and she was dressed in green. The second of the three wore a frock of bright yellow, and she had a way of running off by herself when the sun shone and the soft wind blew in her face. The third was the eldest sister, standing always very straight and tall above the other sisters and trying to guard them. She wore a pale green shawl, and she had long, yellow hair that tossed about her head in the breezes.

There was only one way in which the three sisters were alike. They loved one another very dearly, and they were never separated. They were sure that they would not be able to live apart.

After awhile a stranger came to the field of the three sisters, a little Indian boy. He was as straight as an arrow and as fearless as the eagle that circled the sky above his head. He knew the way of talking to the birds and the small brothers of the earth, the shrew, the chipmunk, and the young foxes. And the three sisters, the one who was just able to crawl, the one in the yellow frock, and the one with the flowing hair, were very much interested in the little Indian boy. They watched him fit his arrow in his bow, saw him carve a bowl with his stone knife, and wondered where he went at night.

Late in the summer of the first coming of the Indian boy to their field, one of the three sisters disappeared. This was the youngest sister in green, the sister who could only creep. She was scarcely able to stand alone in the field unless she had a stick to which she clung. Her sisters mourned for her until the fall, but she did not return.

Once more the Indian boy came to the field of the three sisters. He came to gather reeds at the edge of a stream nearby to make arrow shafts. The two sisters who were left watched him and gazed with wonder at the prints of his moccasins in the earth that marked his trail.

That night the second of the sisters left, the one who was dressed in yellow and who always wanted to run away. She left no mark of her going, but it may have been that she set her feet in the moccasin tracks of the little Indian boy.

Now there was but one of the sisters left. Tall and straight she stood in the field not once bowing her head with sorrow, but it seemed to her that she could not live there alone. The days grew shorter and the nights were colder. Her green shawl faded and grew thin and old. Her hair, once long and golden, was tangled by the wind. Day and night she sighed for her sisters to return to her, but they did not hear her. Her voice when she tried to call to them was low and plaintive like the wind.

But one day when it was the season of the harvest, the little Indian boy heard the crying of the third sister who had been left to mourn there in the field. He felt sorry for her, and he took her in his arms and carried her to the lodge of his father and mother. Oh what a surprise awaited here there! Her two lost sisters were there in the lodge of the little Indian boy, safe and very glad to see her. They had been curious about the Indian boy, and they had gone home with him to see how and where he lived. They had liked his warm cave so well that they had decided now that winter was coming on to stay with him. And they were doing all they could to be useful.

The little sister in green, now quite grown up, was helping to keep the dinner pot full. The sister in yellow sat on the shelf drying herself, for she planned to fill the dinner pot later. The third sister joined them, ready to grind meal for the Indian boy. And the three were never separated again.

Every child of today knows these sisters and needs them just as much as the little Indian boy did. For the little sister in green is the bean. Her sister in yellow is the squash, and the elder sister with long flowing hair of yellow and the green shawl is the corn. Cornell

Berea Gardens:  Happy Thanksgiving!


The big week is upon us and we have some wonderful items to add to your special meal. Our Cauliflower this season is amazing, the best I have seen in years. Literally, the variety we planted is from Harris Organic Seeds and the name of the variety is, well, Amazing! Our Romaine and Red Leaf lettuce is also prime right now and we begin harvest this week of our new Olympic Red Kale. Check out the store and please get your orders to us by Tuesday morning at 9 AM.
