Market News

New Item: Kombucha
I am very happy to welcome Trisha Goodridge of Kombucha Brewing Company to our family of growers and vendors! She is working with Cultured Traditions to bring us locally brewed kombucha. Kombucha is a refreshing effervescent elixir packed with probiotics. They use organic ingredients to create bold flavors that tastes amazing! If you are tying to replace soda in your diet this a great refreshing beverage to try! Flavors offered are: Apple Spice, Berry, Ginger Root, Lemongrass, Mango, Pineapple, and Straight Up.

New coffee – Kenya Murang’a
JavaGenesis, our co-op’s small batch craft coffee roaster, has just added a new coffee Kenya Murang’a. This coffee is so good! It is a medium roast coffee with lots of fig and molasses sweetness on the front end with floral aromatics on the finish. It’s very balanced and full bodied. This one has become my new favorite coffee and I think you’ll love it too. The origin of the name Murang’a is believed to have been used by the Kikuyu people who referred to going for a visit in the area as ‘Kurang’a’ and and later changed to Murang’a. It is located 80 km north east of Nairobi and the coffee is grown on the slopes of the Aberdare range, an extension of Mt Kenya, with red volcanic soil. This coffee is produced by small scale farmers of 1 hectare to 5 hectares of land under the Farmers Cooperative Movement.

JavaGenesis’ roast philosophy is to roast each bean to bring out the best characteristics of the coffee. Your coffee will arrive with the roast date on the package so you will know that you are drinking coffee at the peak of freshness. Whether you choose a medium or dark roast coffee, a single origin or blend or regular or decaf this means a great cup of coffee for you!

Cedar Rock Dairy Price Change (repeat)
We are so fortunate to have Cedar Rock Dairy deliver their milk weekly. Sam hates to do this but due to rising costs he has to increase the price of his milk. He’s been putting this off for several months but unfortunately he has no choice but to increase the price so he can continue to bring us the best Non-GMO, grass fed milk. Starting this weekend these are the prices:
Milk – Raw Jersey Cow Milk for Pets 1/2 gal (Glass Jar)* – $4.40
Milk – Raw Jersey Cow Milk for Pets (Plastic Jug) – $5.50

If you’ve been purchasing in plastic but would like to switch to glass, Sam will list additional GLASS JAR SETS on the market for purchase. If you order your glass jar set this weekend you can immediately order milk in glass as the jars will already be at the farm. Please note you have to have glass jars or purchase a set before you can get the glass jar price! For more info on how the glass jar program works and your responsibilities please click here

FCLO Update

I have decided to add FCLO from Green Pasture back on the group buy calendar. Our next group buy will be the last weekend this month. I have read many articles and blogs on the recent events and I can not find one scientific paper that shows the fermented cod liver oils from Green Pasture are rancid. Many of you have sent me emails of the remarkable results you’ve had and my own son asked me on Monday if he could have his cod liver oil back because he had a test and couldn’t remember the facts. I started our family back on FCLO this week. Also, I figured if there was something “fishy” going on, I bet that will not be the case going forward. That’s just my 2 cents…

Upcoming Group Buys

Below is a list of upcoming co-op group buys to help with planning and budgeting. All dates are subject to change.

FCLO Green Pasture – 9/25 – 9/27
Grass Fed Cheese – 10/9 – 10/11

September Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is a great choice for a light breakfast or healthful dessert. This week I took advantage of our plentiful fruit harvest and enjoyed a Homegrown fruit salad for breakfast, had the leftovers for dessert that night and rounded it out with a smoothie the next morning for. You know I love my vegetables and couldn’t resist adding some cucumbers to my fruit salad for a refreshing twist. For a little protein balancing, add a handful of your favorite nuts and seeds.

Ingredients:
1 Starkrimson pear, diced
1 braeburn apple, diced
1 persimmon, diced
1 cucumber, diced
1 lemon lime hybrid, juiced

Gently toss diced produce with lemon juice and enjoy.

Bon Appetit!
Chef Amy

CSA Farmers Market:  Growing Season Update Sept 18,2015

Almar Orchards is proud to present a beautiful selection of seasonal apples. This week they will be offering a variety of freshly picked organic flavors. Including the one you have all been waiting for, the Honey Crisp. Its sweetness, firmness, and mild tartness make it an ideal apple for eating raw! It has much larger cells than most apples, which BURST when bitten to fill the mouth with juice. The Honey Crisp also retains its colors well and boasts a relatively long shelf life when stored in cool, dry conditions. Other featured apples this week include the Gala, Paula Red, Nova Mac and McIntosh. Some of the varieties are available in large quantities for canning, baking and dehydrating ..or just eating like crazy!

They need two more weeks to cure before we can sell them

Wait and watch the weather, will we have frost, will the soil temperatures get too cold, is the season long enough to give us big potatoes (and some small ones)? Dale, from White Pine Farm, has already begun to dig the sweet potatoes…and they are looking good! After the sweet potatoes are harvested another two weeks of cure time is needed. This helps to toughen and dry out the skins so that they will last longer in storage. Rest assured, they will be worth the wait.

White Pine Farm :  test Market

Almars is finally into more variety of apples available. The extra help has arrived to sort and bag these tasty delights.

Champaign, OH:  The Local Groove!

Good morning, lovely customers of our little local market of love!

I am just sending you a little local groove line to remind you that if you are looking for something local to do, this weekend, you know where you need to be…

Freshwater Farms at their annual Ohio Fish and Shrimp Festival!!

It begins on Friday at 4pm, and it runs until Sunday evening…

It’s the best time, it’s another of my favorite festivals of the year, and they show local love!!

FFWF opens their festival to local farmer’s market vendors, they feature an amazing variety of local bands from not only surrounding counties but from right here in Champaign County, and they feature their own amazing food, showcased up in their al fresco restaurant area, and then they offer both local food vendors as well as amazing seafood vendors from all over.

Kids love the activities, it’s a great family weekend, it’s really a local groovy time!!

From this little local market, you will find Freshwater Farms, of course…then you will find, JC Growers, Sunshine Gardens, and you will find myself, along with Oakview Farm Meats bringing you the local goodness of Oakview’s local sandwiches, chops, brats, and wraps, AND, my own…Cosmic Pizza My Heart! Personal sized festival pizzas featuring a vegetarian version AND the debut of a Cosmic Shrimp/Bacon pizza…

Make your weekend plans but make sure they include a stop at Freshwater Farms!
