CSA Farmers Market:  Growing Season Update July 23

Many of the farmers are picking beans right now; Law Family Farm, White Pine Farm and Whetham Organic Farm. All beans are hand picked carefully to be sure not to break the beans. It sometimes takes hours to find the tender beans hidden behind the leaves before.

Strong winds (gusting to 50 mph) blew a large limb down on our 4-wheeler and as we surveyed other damage we found that they knocked the onion plants over so we will be harvesting those and putting them on the market a little earlier than normal, once the onion plants get knocked down they do not grow larger. The walla wallas were getting to be a good size and we were going to be harvesting anyways, now you can look forward to a lot of tasty sweet onions.

(White Pine Farm) Organic Certification inspector came by and was impressed with our farming operation- as well as the CSA Farmers Market operation. White Pine Farm is also serves as home base for CSA Farmers Market. Without Dales and my (Marian) tireless work the CSA Farmers Market would not exist. The other farmers do help out quite a bit, but for now, the bulk of the work rests on our shoulders.

Until Next Time
Marian Listwak

Market News

When August draws near, I usually issue a warning that nearly all of the favorite summer veggies are about to be in short supply. Once it gets really hot for long stretches, many plants just shut down flower production, and without flowers, there are no fruit. So, when the hot still days of August roll around there is often a sudden decline in tomatoes, beans, squash, peppers, and pretty much everything but okra. This year, though, we might be ok. It’s been plenty hot, but there’s been just enough rain to keep things from getting too dry. We’ll be pushing 100 degrees again this week, but the forecast also calls for scattered showers pretty much every day. If we stay lucky and the trend holds for a few more weeks, the bounty we have now just might be with us right into fall.

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. A new Athens Sunday market has opened up at the Classic Center, every Sunday from 11 to 4 now through October. They have a website here: http://www.sundaycentermarket.com. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Recipes

Tomato and Squash Gratin
This is summer in a dish! Delicious and not too heavy!
From thekitchn.com
Serves 4
5 to 6 medium yellow squash, thinly sliced lengthwise
3 to 4 large tomatoes, thinly sliced
1/3 to 1/2 cup olive oil
15 to 20 whole basil leaves
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup bread crumbs
Salt and pepper, to taste

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Place one layer of sliced squash in the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Top with a layer of sliced tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper and a few basil leaves. Generously drizzle olive oil over everything and sprinkle a little Parmesan cheese on top. Repeat in the same order until you run out of vegetables. The top layer should be tomatoes.

Add a final toss of Parmesan and a generous coating of breadcrumbs and more olive oil. Bake until everything is soft, bubbly and brown on top (about 30 to 40 minutes). Serve as a side dish with whatever you’re grilling or with a bean salad or pasta dish for a complete meal.

Market News

Hello!

It is hard to believe it is almost August! As we enter the “dog days” of summer, we hope you find plenty of time to float in some water, swing in a hammock, and eat lots of great summer food! The Fall days are not too far off, and it is hard to believe there will be a time in the coming months when there will be no more tomatoes! Meanwhile, we’ve got lots of great hot weather produce for you to enjoy now and put up for later.

…If you haven’t ordered yourself a bouquet yet this summer, how about treating yourself? The summer flowers are in full force, with lots of colorful zinnias and celosias. They are a wonderful addition to any home – yours or that of a friend..

The Bloomy Rind is on vacation this week – a working one! Kathleen is in Providence R.I at a cheese artisan conference, where surely she will discover lots of amazing new cheeses for us to try! Next week the selection will be back up.

Meanwhile, please enjoy the blueberries while they are here! The Peach Truck has let us know their peach season is winding down, so this may be the last week to buy their peaches.

We certainly appreciate your support. We know you have many options for buying local produce these days, and are thankful to you for ordering your good veggies, fruits, meats and eggs through Fresh Harvest!

Thanks so much – and we’ll see you on Wednesday!
