I hope this finds you all doing well. Summer is here and so is the heat. Ruff stuff. I can assure yoj it makes I hard to work outside. The pigs can not stand the heat, they spend all the time they can laying in the mud. As I headed oht this evening to check things over I was greeted with a little shower. It cooled thing just a big but also drove the humidity way up.

We have a few hog shares reamainin for delivery and are set and ready for BBQ pigs for the forth so order up.

We will also be making a trip oht for blueberries and if luck the first of the season sweet corn from Green Glades Dairy.

We will see you on Friday between 5-7 at Copy Central.

Anyone setting foot outside could tell you this without looking at a calendar, but we’re now officially in summer. This heat is really brutal on the tender spring crops, and most of the farms in the immediate Athens area have moved on to concentrate on the summer goodies really coming in heavily now. A few farms are experimenting with shade cloth and misting systems to grow items like broccoli for a little while longer, and our member farms up in the mountains aren’t quite as hot as it is here and are likely able to keep the spring things growing for a little longer.

We’re lucky to have the mountains so close by. The farms up there tend to be smaller than those closer in, but their growing season differs just enough that their presence at our market really increases the diversity offered all year ’round. This coming weekend is the perfect time to take a little day trip up there and see firsthand the network of farms that is reviving in the area. The 2015 Georgia Mountains Farm Tour, the fourth year for this annual tour, is Saturday June 27th and Sunday June 28th from 1-6pm each day. The tour features 16 locations from Commerce north through Habersham, Rabun, White, Stephens, and Franklin counties and beyond; including community gardens, a honey bee farm, a working grist mill, fruit orchards and optional meal stops with local foods prepared by acclaimed local chefs.

Participants on the tour purchase one weekend pass that allows a carload of attendees to visit as many tour locations as they choose each day of the tour from the eight farms plus food stops open each day. Among the products featured from the 16 farms on the tour are numerous fruits and vegetables; pasture-raised eggs; grass-fed beef; honey; and water wheel milled organic grains. Other highlights include a farm demonstrating the lost art of horse-powered equipment and several farms using hoop houses for season extension.

In addition to being able to purchase farm products during the tour, many of the farms will have prepared foods to sample, or guests can enjoy a farm-to-table meal at one of the five featured meal stops. Meal stops open two hours before the other tour locations open so that guests can maximize their afternoon tour time. Tour guests should pack extra water, coolers, and be prepared for the weather (sun hats and sunscreen are strongly encouraged!).

Cost of the tour is $35 per carload for weekend passes or $20 for a single day, purchased from any farm on the tour or online. UGA Organic Farm Twilight Tour
Organic and sustainable agriculture experts from the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will host the fourth annual Organic Twilight Tour on Tuesday, June 23, from 6-8 p.m at the Durham Horticulture Farm at 1221 Hog Mountain Road in Watkinsville, Georgia. The open house is a chance for farmers and gardeners to learn about some of the newest research being conducted on the 90-acre farm, where the college’s organic research plots are located. Researchers and students will give talks and describe demonstration plots where the latest organic cultivation practices are tested. This open house is free and no registration is required. Inventing a More Sustainable Agriculture: Field Day at UGA J. Phil Campbell Sr. Research and Education Center’s West Unit
Research faculty and University of Georgia Extension specialists with the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences are hosting a sustainable agriculture field day at the J. Phil Campbell Sr. Research and Education Center in Watkinsville, Georgia, on Thursday, June 25, from 6-8 p.m. Researchers will discuss the latest findings on production practices for corn and in forages that can help increase profitability and decrease environmental impacts. Farmers and those interested in conservation land management should plan to attend. Registration will be free and is on-site. Parking will be available at the Oconee CountyCivic Center at 2661 Hog Mountain Road, Watkinsville. Shuttles will transport participants to and from the J. UGA Extension’s School Garden Workshop for Teachers
University of Georgia Extension is hosting an online and hands-on training program for Georgia teachers who want to start new school gardens or maximize the use of existing school gardens. The workshop will cover garden care and maintenance as well as strategies to build lesson plans, around the school garden, that cover state standards in all subject areas. Teachers will leave with a complete lesson plan that can be used when they head back to class in the fall. The hands-on workshop portion of the class will be held at in Athens, Georgia, at UGArden on Thursday, June 25. Pre-registration is required and the course will cost $25. Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. A new Athens Sunday market has opened up at the Classic Center, every Sunday from 11 to 4 now through October. They have a website here: http://www.sundaycentermarket.com. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

SPLG BENEFIT: Recipe Relief

One of the many things I enjoy as Market Manager is sharing recipes that inspire you to try the produce we sell. In addition to the recipes I promote, we have blog authors on our
Market Community Food Blog, like customer Kim Munshower, who posts pretty regularly. I just love when customers share their experience so we all can learn new ways to surprise our palates. Here are several more recipes that Nathan and I enjoy as well using a variety of produce on the Market this week: eggplant, swiss chard, and a variety of basils for hummus and pestos. Trust me that this Szechuan Eggplant Stir-Fry is better than what we have been coveting as our favorite from a local restaurant. In addition, this recipe for Curried Red Lentil and Swiss Chard Stew with Garbanzo Beans is good year round and especially in the summer now that chard is still available. I’ve turned alot of people onto this make-ahead stew, saving time and excess heat in the kitchen. Not familiar with pestos? If you have never made pesto before, they are great on pasta, fish, beef, etc. You can even add pesto to any sauces you make. You can substitute whatever nuts you have on hand just as long as you finely chop them. Cheese is not necessary. I add real butter too! Make a creamy consistency to your liking and savor this wonderful condiment called Pesto. Like hummus? You haven’t lived til you make one with peanut butter! OMG here it is… Thai Basil Hummus. Super major flavor and very satisfying. Bon Appetit!

FOURTH OF JULY FOOD FARE
Having a Holiday gathering for the Fourth of July? Although we can’t plan your menu, we can surely provide many of the ingredients for great summer fare and offer suggestions with recipes that have worked for us. After delivery from SPLG on Friday you’ve got a whole week to prepare for your July 4th gathering using pastured eggs, ham, and apricots from our Market this week. We suggest some good old standards with a twist here and there. For starters, try this French Style potato salad recipe that is one of my favorites from Cook’s Illustrated. Here’s your chance to
make devilled eggs from pastured eggs. I’ve heard that it helps to add a pinch of baking soda to the boiling water. Ever tried making pulled pork in a crockpot? Just get a ham and let the crockpot do its thing. For an adventurous ice cream dessert try Brown Butter Apricots Brioche and Ice Cream. Need a time saver? Lately I’ve been making pies (buying the refrigerated crusts you unroll into a pie pan) and using up all leftover fruit I can find. No waste and what a treat! SUMMER EGGS
According to Pam of The Dancing Goat, summer egg layers pose a challenge as they want to go broody and hide their eggs. This can make eggs too mature for sale. SO, before you crack them open, put the eggs in a bowl of room temp water. The floaters should be discarded and your Market Manager notified so the eggs can be replaced.

SPEAKER THIS MONTH: The special guest speaker for this social is Leon Elt, owner of Alexandra Lake Farm and provider of our Market’s lamb cuts. He will talk about raising animals in a sustainable and humane way and volunteer opportunities up in Dade City for those who want to learn from his experience. Leon is also a Permaculture designer, specializing on integrating animals in living systems of any scale and if you have questions about that you will have a chance to ask them. Also, as co-founder and the President of a non-profit farm incubator (Big Small Farm, Inc.), Leon is knee deep in advocating the production of healthy local food and teaching other people to do that. Leon is making the trip all the way from Dade City to join us so let’s get a good size group here to meet & greet him! Please RSVP if at all possible so we can plan for adequate space!

Recipes

Italian Agretti

A healthy Italian side dish that is easy to make.

Ingredients:
1 TBSP course salt
½ to 1 pound of agretti depending on number to serve
¾-whole lemon juiced
2 TBSP extra virgin olive oil

Wash the agretti—no need to dry

Bring large pot of water to a boil, add the salt, then the agretti. Cook for 5-10 minutes until tender. Drain, then combine with lemon juice, and olive oil. Serve warm or cold.

Hello!

The summer heat is here, and so are the summer veggies. We have a great selection for you this week and a LOT of quantity on some items. Take advantage of the bounty of green beans this week, and put some up for freezing or canning. We know Summer is just beginning, but you got to get them while they are bountiful!

We hope you are enjoying the first tastes of our local and organically grown tomatoes, cucumbers and summer squashes. The tomatoes are just starting, and soon we should have the cherry tomatoes and slicing tomatoes pouring in.

Lots of flowers this week, too. The sunflowers are in, and are offered in straight bunches as well as being in the large bouquets.

The Bloomy Rind has a delicious selection of cheeses up for you this week. Don’t forget the essentials from Dozen Bakery – good bread fresh baked that day and shortbread for fruit cobblers!

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open


Happy Father’s Day and happy new week! The market is open on this bright, sunny day.

This week, I have a brief request. There is a great deal of activity that occurs behind the scenes with ALFN. As a mediator between grower and consumer, ALFN serves to disperse information, maintain the market website, pay growers, and provide quality local food to growing local demand. ALFN has a board of directors who volunteer their time to guide the organization toward a sustainable local food system. Composed of growers and consumers, board members have many different responsibilities. One of the most important tasks is the work done by the treasurer. Our treasurer ultimately is the rain gauge for determining the germination rate and success of all the ideas planted and cultivated over the years. In the end, sustainability is accounted and confirmed by our treasurer.

The treasurer position rotates to able-minded individuals who are willing to help ALFN. Our current treasurer, Michelle Rhoden, has down a fantastic job and her period of service will be ending this fall. It is our desire to find a new treasurer with a background in accounting to come alongside Michelle and learn the system for a smooth transition. The board is currently looking for individuals who would be interested in this task. Could you help us in this search? If you or anyone you know would be interested, please email us and let us know! My name is Ashley Stewart and I am a dietitian and diabetes educator with a holistic approach to healthy eating. I have written a children’s book called Wilson Tries New Foods that teaches kids a complete nutrition lesson. It includes what a healthy plate should look like, food groups, looking at ingredient lists etc. It rhymes and teaches healthy eating through a lovable Boston Terrier named Wilson.

Brady at Double B Farm is selling 1/4 hog share, 1/2 hog share or a whole hog! They have piglets from 6 weeks and up.
Each share weight is dependent on hog size at harvest. However, a 1/2 hog share usually weighs between 75-80 lbs.
Their hogs are raised outdoors on a diet of grass, weeds, garden goodies and a 100% NON GMO ration grown right here in Georgia!Our hogs are born, raised and processed on their farm.
They are selling BBQ pigs for July 4th so get yours through our Market today!!

In other news….

Sadly, because we didn’t have enough orders from week to week, Johnston Family Farm can no longer provide us raw milk and butter. I’m working very hard to find another Grower for milk and hope in a week or so to a new Grower on board. Having said that though, please tell your friends and family about us because from conversations, they are looking for a minimum order to drive the distance to deliver to us. Stay tuned!



UPDATE ON SALMON

We have the opportunity to get fresh frozen Sockeye salmon which is the best of all salmon as a pre-buy in 2 to 3 weeks.
This deliciously fresh salmon is carefully selected directly from the fishermen’s nets from the cold Alaskan waters before it ever enters the ship’s hold. Only the best is chosen to become part of " Running Wild Alaskan Seafood’s" premium offerings. The fish is immediately bled and iced down before making the short boat ride to the processor located in Homer, Alaska. Here it is quickly processed and flash frozen (to ensure freshness) then packed into coolers for the overnight trip to Georgia. This is the freshest salmon available without going to Alaska to catch it yourself. Red Sockeye salmon is packed with flavor and nutrition.
If you are interested in buying salmon which is only available during their season in end of June and month of July. The word is that packages will be about 8 ounces and sell around $9.50 a pack. I will be contacting those already on our list to see how much you are wanting to order. There is a 5 pound minimum and purchasing will be available in about 2 to 3 weeks. If you are interested in participating in the pre-buy, please email me at grow@ranchoalegrefarm.com with your name and phone number so we can contact you! This opportunity is through one of our Growers!
