Market News

The market is now open – if you’d like to order produce, go ahead and place your orders online till 11pm Monday night! If you would like to order special items, i.e. not a box, please put your order in ASAP!

We are planning to have a Steering Committee meeting this coming week so please e-mail us if you’d like to be part of the conversation. We’d love your input!

We have brought on a few new, either certified USDA Organic or organic methods, farms – Rabbits Etc uses organic methods in Masaryktown; Geraldson Farm , a USDA organic farm out of Sarasota; as well as Windmill farms, a small backyard organic permaculture operation out of Plant City.

There are some really good items from all – from eggs to kale to tomatoes!

We try to find the most honest farmers with the healthiest & freshest food for the club as we build into an Food Cooperative.
We’d really appreciate your input on anything and everything regarding the buying club- this is a cooperative and is therefore, to be democratically managed by member owners. We want to build community so please, give us feedback so that we can perform better and have a strong backing when we file for nonprofit cooperative status with the state!

We’re also thinking of having a potluck and documentary night, so let us know what night would work for you. Like our Facebook page

As for items from certain farmers (Windmill, Morning Star, etc.), if there is not enough product ordered, it doesn’t always make financial sense for us to drive an hour or two to pick it up. We’ll try to communicate better with members when this happens but just wanted to give everybody a heads up.

Check out some great upcoming events down below!

Email us if you have any questions.

The boxes are now hand-selected by the customer/member instead of pre-packaged. This means the earlier you come, the more selection you’ll have for your box! Please bring your own box or reusable bag as we are running low at the coop. Also, if you have any to donate, it would be greatly appreciated.

Farm Spotlight

My Mother’s Garden
USDA Certified Organic

My Mother’s Garden is located in south Hillsborough County on the Little Manatee River. We have been certified organic since 1992 and keep 3 greenhouses of culinary herbs, a little citrus and a small market garden. We are ecologically diverse, raising our Berkshire pigs in the woods and on pasture, grass-fed and finished beef rotationally grazed and laying hens in chicken tractors ferilizing the pastures. The livestock has not been certified organic but are raised in a natural habitat and are never given antibotics or hormones.

Statesboro Market2Go:  The Market is OPEN!

Wow! Did you see the veggies on the tables this week? We have some beautiful carrots, beets, kale, swiss chard and Vidalia salad onions—just to name a few of the veggies in season! What about the trees? Southern Native Planting delivered some beautiful apple trees — in fact, we planted one in our yard last weekend. Hunter Cattle brought their award-winning sausage (congrats to the Fergusons!), we had bakery goods, laundry soap, pecans, farm fresh eggs, and SO MUCH MORE! Please tell your friends about Statesboro Market2Go!

Local Farms First:  Enhance Your Life with Eggs!

Greetings local food lovers!

The Market is Open!

Aside from having a chicken coop in your backyard, the delicious eggs on the market are the next best thing!

We’ve got turkey eggs, duck eggs, bantam eggs, chicken eggs and quail eggs from four different farms.

Don’t like your eggs scrambled or over easy? Use them to take your baking to the next level, whip the whites into homemade marshmallows or hard boil and chop to enrich potato or pasta salads.

Thanks for supporting local family farms,

Produce Boxes on Tuesday?

On another note, as I posted on my previous weblog, many of you are requesting that I offer the produce boxes on Tuesday instead of Friday.

By all accounts, the kick-off of the Veggie Truck Farmers Market in Harrisburg was a wild success! This market will be held every Tuesday, 4:30p-7p, thru the late fall. Thanks to a grant from Wholesome Wave Georgia, customers can double the value of food stamps when they purchase from local farmers at this market. Augusta Locally Grown is honored to be a partner in this endeavor, along with GRU School of Medicine, St Luke Methodist, Good Neighbor Ministries, Addersons Fresh Produce and a handful of amazing community volunteers. Hugs to those farmers who came aboard for the inaugural: Addersons Fresh Produce, JandL Farm & Stables, Shady Creek Greens and Crossed Stars Farm.

Biggest hugs to market volunteer Carly McClellan for her tireless efforts at the Evans Towne Farmers Market. Carly arrives in time to help farmers set up, and stays to the end to help break it all down. In between she assists with all the little things that make this weekly endeavor special. As of today, I’m calling her our “Market Angel.”

Two more key volunteers have also come forward, this time to help Augusta Locally Grown teach two six-week youth cooking class at the Boys & Girls Clubs. Jason Winn and Vicki Sasser have agreed to assist in teaching the “Cooking Matters” curriculum with a local, seasonal flare. We start Monday! Big thanks to the BGC for this great opportunity.

The Hobby Farmers Association of the CSRA will host a children’s workshop on taking care of “Chicks & Ducklings” on Saturday, April 20, at 11am, at Trinity on the Hill UMC, Room A004. Best parking is the lot at the corner of Monte Santo & McDowell in Augusta. A concurrent “Organic Gardening” workshop will be offered to adults. Visit their website at for more information.

See y’all at the markets on Tuesday and Thursday!

Order today for pickup at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Clemson Montessori, 4:30-6 at Swamp Rabbit Café and Grocery, and at Whole Foods Market, Wednesday 8am-7 PM

We are pleased to offer you plenty of fresh, local proteins and produce, as well as eggs from Putney Farm, Happy Cow milk products, Swamp Rabbit baked goods, and much, much more.

Have your ordered greens from Spurgeon Farms lately? Not only are these fresh collards and kale tender and delicious, they are chopped and packaged in a gallon bag. That means all you have to do is rinse and cook. Better than the grocery store on every level! Click on vegetables for this and other great winter produce offerings.

Upstate Locally Grown donates a portion of our sales to Broken Wing Farm, a non-profit dedicated to training autistic young men in farming practices. More about this in future newsletters.
Clemson Locally Grown donates 3 percent of our order profits to Clemson Montessori School, in return for use of their school parking lot as a drop-off location. We also appreciate the helpful hands of CMS market volunteers. Feel free to lend your hands, if you have a moment to do so.

Donna’s Corner

We at Upstate Locally Grown strive to find you the freshest, greenest, and most alive foods available anywhere! They are picked fresh for you at the very peak of their ripeness, cooled, and shuttled to you in our little white veggie-van, always in coolers to preserve the vibrancy, crispness, and nutrition. We are what we eat, and we produce live cells from living foods!

The milk that we bring to you is from the latest and freshest batch, the greens were in the field earlier that day, and the eggs are always freshly laid! What more can you ask, than for the grower to go out and pick/pull, gather, and harvest just for you, and send it quickly on to your kitchen?

Please tell your friends about us, and ask them to mention that you sent us. You will receive 10% off your order when your friend writes a note on their order that you sent them!

We appreciate Clemson Montessori School for allowing us to host our drop-off in their shady parking lot!
