Weedy Soil Farm

Getting to know your farmer….

Hello, my name is Lois Dewey, and it turns out that if you rearrange the letters in my name you get Weedy Soil. I’ve known about that for a while, so when it came time to pick a name for my new farm, I just had to use it. I am now in my fourth year of farming, though I have been an organic gardener for as long as I can remember. It’s just the way it’s always been done!

Weedy Soil Farm is Certified Naturally Grown. Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) is an alternative to the USDA organic certification. The same rules and standards are required, in fact sometimes there are additional restrictions. Instead of relying on a government-sanctioned certifier, CNG uses a method of farmers inspecting other farmers. We each understand the importance of maintaining the reputation of the certification and work hard to ensure compliance. The USDA certification is geared toward large farms and requires too much paperwork and expense for a small farm to handle.

Locally grown food is better for a variety of reasons. The biggest reason is it tastes better because of its freshness. Food grown at Weedy Soil Farm will generally be available the day after it is harvested. Second in importance (to me anyway) is the reduced environmental impact. Buying food from Weedy Soil Farm means minimal packaging and far less fossil fuel burned to deliver it to you.

I work hard to produce the best, freshest, tasty vegetables available. I have a passion for the environment and protecting nature. I hope it shows in my produce.

Look for Lois’s delicious produce on the Cumming Harvest website under “Vegetables” and “fruits”.

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Reminder

There is an indigenous American folktale told by the Cherokee that seems relevant to our seasonal produce. According to the origin myth, Sky Woman and First Man had an argument. After Sky Woman left, First Man was overwhelmed with regret. However, First Man couldn’t catch up with Sky Woman; she was too fast. In compassion, the sun created strawberries to distract Sky Woman from her anger so First Man could catch up to her and apologize.

The market is still bursting with vibrant colors of red and green today. Take a break from the hectic week and allow the colors of local produce to distract you for a moment today. Who knows? Maybe what you find in the market will alow you to catch up with your loved ones over a plate full of sun-filled food.

Remember to enter your order this week before the market closes Wednesday at noon!

Here’s to blue skies!
