Carolina Foothills, SC:  Food for Thought!

http://carolinafoothills.locallygrown.net/market

It’s a nice inside kind of day. Take some time to see what’s growing and make your orders.

While I am a grower I don’t grow everything ! I feel it’s absolutely critical for farmers to support each other as well. There is so much good food here! Thank you to ALL our Growrrs and Producers!

Today I went to Ingles for bananas and avocados. I was noticing that prices for conventionally grown produce is high! What a shock ! I’m am thankful that the prices here for local chemical free foods are very affordable . It very much validates my passion for letting you , my fellow farmers, supply the food and health products for my family. Thank you.

It’s worth it to order here first. Then visit your farmers at the open markets weekends. There is every reason to sustain yourself and family on llocal farm food all week long all year long !

Eat Well!

Farmer Updates

Miss Vicky of Fry Farm is back at the Lilburn Market! She has some great produce to offer this week: Green Onions, Leeks, Lettuce Mix, Romaine Lettuce, Cherry Belle Radishes and French Breakfast Radishes. Welcome back Fry Farm!

Tammy of Burnell Farms does not have any items available this week. With prior Traditional Farmers’ Markets commitments, we are trying to figure out how we she and William can also accommodate our Markets!

The Veggie Patch is providing a good selection of wonderful fresh Spring veggie offerings and have fresh Herbs listed as well! Arugula, Bunching Onions, 4 types of Kale or a Mix, Green Lettuce, Red Lettuce, Mizuna, 2 kinds of HOT Peppers, Salad Mix and Swiss Chard. In addition, they offer cuttings if Herbs: German Thyme, Rosemary, 2 types of Parsley, Oregano, Chives and Medicinal Herbs: Marjoram, Lavender and Chamomile. The Heirloom Seedlings, (both Herb and Veggie) that I received are all doing well! Andrew and his crew certainly got them off to a banner start — now if I can just keep them healthy!

Doug of Doug’s Garden 2 types of Veggie Boxes available on the all Markets this week. Both contain a plethora of Veggies and the Herb Box has an added bag of freshly harvested Herbs! (lots of herbs!) In addition, he has added 1# bags of Spring Mix Lettuce, Young Spinach and Spicy Lettuce Mix! Lilburn folks were fortunate to see his huge Kohlrabi (alien looking root veggie) and a few were ‘brave enough’ to purchase! Please be sure and pick up Recipes at Market! Kohlrabi is very versatile — peeled and shredded along with a Granny Smith Apple makes an outstanding Cole Slaw! Depending on what is ready for Harvest this coming week, Doug will have additional items on the Farmers’ Sales Table.

High Garden Center formerly Cedar Seeder! Yes, finally George has gotten the new green house at their new property up and running and his plantings are yielding results! He had quite a undertaking to get the new place cleared and ready for planting and now Sunflowers, Broccoli, Wheat Grass, Kale SPROUTS are ready for us to eat! Also called Microgreens or Micros – no matter your preference of names, these are little but mighty powerhouses of nutrient dense food! These are plants and come in pots that fit into the Cedar Planters hand made by George. (You can purchase the planters on the Market also!) Either way – put them in your kitchen window and add to salads, smoothies or juices! It’s Spring; time to detox and renew! Welcome back Krista and George!

… this and that …

I have been busy with “life” these past few days and so this Newsletter is later than usual.

One thing has been on my mind that I would like to share…

The Market is called Heirloom Living because at its inception, Mary and I wanted the name to reflect the mission:

“… providing local products, services and education to the community to increase good health, share knowledge about the importance of eating traditional foods that are nutrient-dense, found locally and in season…”

Everyday we hear about or see pricing rising — for gas, food … well actually everything! I read last week that food prices have increased 10% in the last year alone. It is so convenient to go into a traditional grocery store and be able to purchase any fruit or veggie, regardless of the season and most barely give thought to the “process” about how that all happens. Suffice it to say, although the produce may look “fresh”, it is FAR from the truly FRESH fruits and veggies we get from our local Farmers. “Eating with the seasons” is not a concept that most are familiar with and the adaptation (change) is not always easy! We are blessed to have the knowledge and capabilities to preserve part of the seasonal harvest for consumption when there are only winter greens available! So, I urge you to do so! Purchase extra veggies and can them or freeze them. I so enjoyed peaches this past winter when the trees were bare!

I am sure there are those of you who know the ins and outs of Food Preservation! Sharing this important information with other Members of the Market is important. Do you can or freeze or dehydrate any items? If so, would you be willing to show others? Drop me an email if you would like to be involved!

I hope that you all had a good weekend… The Black Lab and I got much done in the yard yesterday and hope to do more tomorrow. He dug several holes yesterday — not exactly what I had in mind and he added to my list of things to do, but it was a good day out in the sunshine!

It is time to say – thank you for taking the time to read this missive…

Have you seen the Blackberry Mead Vinegar Jay has listed in his offerings! WOW! It makes a great salad dressing! I also tried reducing it and used it as a glaze for Lamb Chops! Oh, yes, it was a winner!

Patti makes some outstanding Natural Body Products from the honey and beeswax. Her Gardener’s Friend Soap is fantastic!

Bo and Megan of My Quality Mushrooms had a very busy and productive Winter making many improvements to their Farm! They are concentrating their efforts on serving the restaurant community; however, I am talking with them about purchasing on a monthly basis. Please let me know if you are interested – we would have to have a minimum order.

STRAWBERRIES

Watsonia Farms Strawberries arrived 2 weeks ago and sadly, this may be the last week we will see them! Since berries are picked daily, Brandon has no way of knowing if he can fill our orders until Market Day. Also, please be aware the price may be higher this week if they are available. …That’s the kind-of-not-so-good-news…but
Peaches will be arriving in the next couple of weeks! ..that is the GOOD news!

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open and Memorial Day Updates!

Good Morning Locavores,

The market is open and loaded with local goodness! There’s still plenty of time to stock your Memorial Day grill-out with an array of quality meats, veggies, breads, and cheeses from small, Arkansas producers. Speaking of which, for those that are leaving town for the holiday, we will be moving our normal Monday pick-up next week to Tuesday, May 27th from 4:30-6pm. So if you place an order this week and select Monday as your pick-up location, you’re actually going to come pick it up on Tuesday. Fear not, if you ordered for Monday last week, we’ll still be there tomorrow! We hope this makes it easier on y’all to have a nice, relaxing holiday without fear or worry of how you’ll get your local groceries. Here’s just some of the quality products you can grill next week:

  • When it comes to topping that meat, there’s an incredible variety of cheeses to choose from. That raw milk jalapeno cheddar from Daley Dairy would go perfect on any burger. Same goes for Kent Walker’s habanero cheddar. In fact, just give me any of his gourmet cheeses, or one of the marinated fetas from White River Creamery, and a good loaf of Arkansas Fresh sourdough, and I’ll be good to go.
  • Lots of new products from the creative minds at Maison Terre. Their reduction for triglyceride levels is a handmade concoction of organic flax seed oil and pure essential oils of lemongrass, turmeric, clove, and ginger. A teaspoon a day keeps the doctor at bay! They’ve also got 3 new body and baby powders: chaparral white sage, lavender mint, and marshmallow plaintain, the last of which was formulated especially for babies. All of these are antimicrobial, antibacterial, talc- and grain-free, and soothing for any irritated skin.
  • We’re excited to premiere our very own ALFN Eat Local: Grow Local bumper stickers. Promote local food by adorning one of these on your vehicle, guitar case, baby stroller, or just about anything! We’re asking for a $1 suggested donation to re-coup printing costs, but any donations beyond that are greatly appreciated and go to supporting your Arkansas Local Food Network.

We’ve happy to announce that our friends at the North Little Rock Community Farm are finalists in the Regions Bank: What a Difference a Day Makes grant contest. For those that haven’t heard, the NLR Community Farm was established in the Fall of 2013, and only one year later, it is growing vegetables and raising animals to feed the 651 homeless students in the North Little Rock School District. Help support this awesome project by voting for them once per day between May 19th and June 13th here. They’ll even send you daily vote reminders if you e-mail announcements@nlrcommunityfarm.com. As always, thanks for supporting a healthier local food system!

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too! Just in time for Memorial Day and while strawberries are still available. This recipe is from Yummly and thekitch.

No-Bake Strawberry Icebox Cake
serves 8 to 12

Ingredients
2 pounds fresh strawberries, washed
3 1/4 cups whipping cream, divided
1/3 cup confectioners sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon rosewater (optional)
4 sleeves (about 19 ounces, or 24 to 28 whole crackers) graham crackers
2 ounces dark chocolate, finely chopped

Directions
Take out a few of the best-looking strawberries and set them aside for the garnish. Hull the remainder of the strawberries and slice each berry into thin slices.

With a hand mixer or in the bowl of a stand mixer, whip 3 cups of cream until it just holds stiff peaks. Add the confectioners sugar, vanilla, and rosewater (if using) and whip to combine.

Spread a small spoonful of whipped cream on the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking pan, or a similarly-sized platter. Lay down six graham crackers. Lightly cover the top of the graham crackers with more whipped cream, and then a single layer of strawberries. Repeat three times, until you have four layers of graham crackers. Spread the last of the whipped cream over the top and swirl it lightly with a spoon. Add a few more strawberries.

To make the ganache, heat the cream until bubbles form around the edges, then pour over the chopped chocolate. Let it stand for a few minutes, then whisk until the mixture is thick and glossy. Drizzle this over the layered dessert with a spoon, or transfer to a squeeze bottle and use that to drizzle.

Refrigerate for at least four hours, or until the crackers have softened completely. Garnish with additional berries.

I thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

John
