Pecan and Fig Spread

Ingredients
2 1/2 pounds Figs
1 pound Sugar
1/4 cup Water
2 cups Pecan pieces (toasted)
Juice & zest from 2 lemons
Zest from 1 orange
1 teaspoon Salt
2 teaspoons Pepper
Crackers for serving (if desired)
Sliced & toasted bread for serving (if desired)
OR ice cream for serving (if desired)

Step by Step Instructions
  1. Place the figs, sugar, and water in a saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  2. Add the pecans and simmer for 3 minutes. Add both kinds of zest and simmer for 1 more minute. Turn off the heat and add the lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  3. Pour the spread onto a tray and refrigerate to cool. Store in jars in the fridge. Use as a dip for crackers & toasted bread, or as a topping for ice cream.
