GFM :  Vendor Introduction

One of our newer online vendors is Cherie’s Crochet and Soap Shoppe.
Cherie specializes in homemade natural soaps, many with fresh goat milk from her own goats. Most of her soaps are 100% natural, using only vegetable-based ingredients (no lard). A few of her soaps use synthetic scents, and therefore are not labelled as 100% natural. She uses no artificial colors in her soaps.
Cherie is also a talented crochet artist. She makes unique items for the home, such as the popular “wiggle” trivets; gifts for babies such as animal-topped “Lovies”; hats; stuffed animals that are BABY SAFE; and afghans and lap robes of all sizes. She will custom-make any of her offerings, changing sizes, colors, etc., at no additional charge.
Her prices are very reasonable, many times less than found elsewhere online.

Be sure to check out the items she has for sale, for your special “someone.”

Hello, I hope this finds you all doing well. The market is open and ready for orders.
We will be open next week as well but closed the following two for Christmas and New Years. We will reopen for our regularly scheduled market on January 8.

We have lots of goodies for you to enjoy. I will be picking up our pigs from the processor this week so order up. We should have lots of everything including bacon, sausage, chops and more. It would be a great time to order up a Christmas hog share for friends and family.

We will see you on Friday between 5-7 at Copy Central on Parker road.

Thank you,
Brady

Jonesborough Locally Grown:  100 Mile Holiday Brunch still has seats!

Our 100 Mile Holiday Brunch is on Sunday Dec 20th at 12:30pm, $30.00 per person, and we have 8 seats left. See below for the planned menu.

This will be the 4th “100 mile meal” fundraiser we have hosted at Boone Street Market. For each event, we turn the store into a banquet hall for 30 guests, who are served a meal featuring ingredients sourced from our 100 mile radius prepared by a different guest chef—or chefs in this case! All proceeds benefit the operation of Jonesborough Locally Grown (which means the Jonesborough Farmers Market and Boone Street Market).

We are already planning for one gluten-free guest, so if you are gluten free and want to attend…give Karen a call as soon as possible (571-2235).

Call or come by the store to secure your seat! (753-4722)

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

It has been such a warm fall this year, that I feel like I am back in Georgia. For us, this has been great! We still have high tunnels full of green veggies just waiting for your dinner plates. We still have carrots growing from a late seed planting. Albeit things are growing slower due to shorter days, but they are still growing. I will try and get photos up on our facebook page this week, because it is just so beautiful.
I look forward to seeing everyone on Friday,
Angela

Market News

This is the time for holiday artisan markets, and you can find something going on pretty much every day for the next three weeks. The last few years I’ve been listing the markets here in my newsletter, but this year there are just too many for me to list. However, the Flagpole has done a great job assembling them all into a nice descriptive list. They’ve got an online version here if you didn’t pick up the paper copy: http://flagpole.com/arts-culture/arts-culture-features/2015/12/02/artist-market-roundup. You’ve already demonstrated your commitment to buy some of your food from local farmers. Giving gifts made from local artisans is just as important, and can be even more rewarding!

At our pickup this Thursday, Kathryn from Beehaven will be there with her beautiful beeswax candles and balms. She lists them on the website every week, but I know many of you like to see those sorts of things in person before deciding to buy them. Kathryn would love to show them to you, tell you about the process she uses to make them, and generally share her enthusiasm for bees with you.

This year, both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve fall on a Thursday. After talking with the growers, we’ve decided to take the week of Christmas off. There was less consensus, though, on the week of New Year’s. Our options are to hold it as normal on New Year’s Eve, to move it up to Wednesday the 30th, or to take that week off too, and return in January. Several of our growers are taking the extra week off regardless. Last year, we moved it to the 30th and had a very light market. Holding it on the 31st seems like a bad idea. What do you all think? I know many of you are overwhelmed those weeks with places to go and people to see, kids out of school, and general holiday exhaustion, but if there’s enough call for a market that week, we can work out the details. Let me know!

Thanks so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it! You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market is open on Saturdays at Bishop Park and Wednesday afternoons downtown at Creature Comforts. You can catch the news on their website. The West Broad Farmers Market from the Athens Land Trust is open Saturday mornings and their farm stand is open Tuesday afternoons. They have a website too. A new Athens Sunday market has opened up at the Classic Center, every Sunday from 11 to 4 now through October. They have a website here: http://www.sundaycentermarket.com. The Comer Farmers Market is open in downtown Comer on Saturday mornings. The Oconee County farmers market is open Saturday mornings in front of the Oconee County Courthouse in Watkinsville. The Shields Ethridge Cultivator Market is held monthly in Jefferson. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
