Savoy Cabbage Slaw with Basil and Lemon
from Epicurious
No lettuce these hot days, but try a great slaw for dinner! The lemon and basil make this really a stand out!

For a nice variation, try making this one with Napa cabbage.
Can be prepared in 45 minutes or less.

8 cups finely sliced savoy cabbage (about 1 1/4 pounds)
1/2 cup chopped fresh basil
1/2 cup low-fat (2%) buttermilk
1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise
1/4 cup grated onion
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried
preparation

Combine cabbage and basil in large bowl.

Whisk buttermilk, mayonnaise, grated onion, lemon juice, lemon peel and thyme in small bowl to blend. Add dressing to cabbage mixture; toss to coat. Season to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 3 hours ahead. Cover; refrigerate.)

Market News

Hello!

We’ve got a bounty of summer produce for you! Now is a great week for you to think of preserving some of our offerings. Cucumbers for pickles, tomatoes for canning, basil for pesto in the freezer, cabbage for kimchi or sauerkraut. Are you thinking about winter yet? We farmers are! It is always amazing to be in the thick of summer and be needing to plan our crops for Fall and Winter. So these days, in addition to harvesting daily the tomatoes, squashes, cukes and green beans, we are seeding and transplanting the crops we’ll be harvesting for you come September and October.

This week we have local, organically grown berries for you! We will be offering blueberries from Blue Honey Farm in Eagleville, Tn. These are unsprayed, organically grown blueberries. You can read more about their farm on the “Our Grower’s” Page of the website, and contact them directly with any questions. We will continue to have their berries in the weeks ahead! We will also have a limited supply of blackberries from Natural Fields Farm in Gallatin. These berries are listed under the “fruits” section on the Market page offerings on the left side of the page.

Please remember you can read information about all of our growers and producers on the “Our Growers” page. We want you to know and love all of the Fresh Harvest vendors, just as we do. Most of them we have worked with for many years and we value their friendships as well as are proud to be able to offer you their products.

This week we will have the Peach Truck with us again. Lucky us! And the peaches are just getting better and better. And please remember to support our other wonderful vendors like Little Seed Farm soaps, Dozen Bakery Twin Forks farm bread and granola, Tru Bee honey, and cheeses from The Bloomy Rind.

Once again, thanks so much for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

John and Tallahassee

Coming Events

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

South Cumberland Farmer's Market:  Market Page Today

Someone e-mailed us that the Market page wasn’t “moving.” Yesterday we included in the blog to send a separate e-mail to cumberlandfm@gmail.com (not a Reply to another e-mail or an e-mail to all market managers through the software. We would have seen this sooner if we had received a separate e-mail. It was not signed, and we have no idea who sent it.

As to why the Market page isn’t moving: There is a lot of traffic on the servers over the weekend. For example, when you add an item to your cart when ordering, look for the “working” icon (spinning circle usually). We have found that at the market, especially, we have to frequently refresh our pages. Please try those solutions and get back to us by sending a separate e-mail to: cumberlandfm@gmail.com

Thanks!
Kir and Linda

Farm Where Life is Good:  Online Market is OPEN for Business (Week 29)

Well, I guess Rog’s lifting restrictions are off now!

Life on the Farm (Week 29)

We awoke to another distraction. I can either be overjoyed that I don’t have to go find the carrots seedlings in the weeds today, or I can be majorly disturbed by the fact that we have an 24+" diameter mature box elder tree down across our driveway. The downpour we received yesterday was the proverbial straw on the camel; the soil gave up the ghost on the big old tree’s rootball. Over she came. So the carrot-weed competition shall continue for another few days, and the pile of maple cooking firewood will grow immeasurably. (And I will be able to go to work tomorrow!)

Summer squash is in full flowering kick! We will have squash this week!

Ok, enough yammerin’; I need to get back to the tree and prevent Rog from undoing all of the nice surgeon’s work.

The Market is now open for your produce delights.

Ordering will be open from Sunday morning until Monday 8pm. Get your orders in now so harvesting can begin specific to your requests.

Deliveries will be made Wednesday per usual to your chosen Dropsite Location .

Recipes for your consideration

Sorry, I’m just going to refer you to the Recipe section on the website for some useful recipes this week. Hard physical labor calls to me.

If anyone has some good recipes for this weeks ingredients, pop on over to the website and enter them there for everyone’s benefit!.

Did You Know…

The box elder tree, Acer negundo, is a small (nope, I don’t agree_), usually fast-growing (certainly is!) and fairly short-lived (_50 years is youngster for at tree, wish it were the same for us!) tree that grows up to 10–25 metres (33–82 ft) tall, with a trunk diameter of 30–50 centimetres (12–20 in) , rarely up to 1 metre (3.3 ft) diameter (yep, that’s the truth). It often has several trunks and can form impenetrable thickets.

Subscription Box Highlights

Anticipated this week for the CSA/Subscription Boxes:

Broccoli
Kale
Cabbage
Head lettuce
Green onions
Kohlrabi
Summer squash
Cucumbers
Thyme
Garlic chives

Start your meal planning now!

We hope to feed you soon!

Roger and Lara

This Newsletter is basically a repeat of last week’s missive, although some of the veggies listings have changed! Next week, I promise to change things up and offer some recipes and suggests for ‘putting up the harvest’!

I hope you are all well and enjoying the bountiful harvest offered by our wonderful, hard-working Farmers and Producers!

Note to Folks who placed bulk order from Good Shepherd Herbals. Dena has been out of town and just returned this weekend. She will pull the order together this week and ship the items to me the beginning of the week!

I wish you all a happy day and a wonderful week!

It is time to say – thank you for taking the time to read this missive…
