Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

I tried to come up with a recipe that encompassed everything we had to offer this week, and I could not narrow it down to one.
So instead I thought I would let you into our world of food. We are eating a bunch of salads and soups at our house this time of year. We are so busy getting veggies into the ground and lambing that it is refreshing to throw all the ingredients into the crock pot in the morning and come in at the end of a long day to the great smelling food. We have been pulling carrots and lettuce fresh from the garden for salads. It is very satisfying to be eating seasonally what is coming out of the garden.
See you on Thursday!
Angela

Cedar Grove Farm:  CSA Availability for 5/14

Happy Mother’s Day, y’all. We just enjoyed a delicious meal here at the farm with family. There was kale salad, grilled squash and radishes, roasted root vegetables, grilled lamb and steak, key lime pie, and vanilla ice cream with coconut caramel sauce. We eat pretty well around here.

New this week are the scarlet queen turnips, which have a beautiful crimson skin and can be used raw in salads, as a quick pickle, or roasted with other root vegetables. There are lots of other goodies to choose from this week, so get your orders in!

Pick ups are Wednesdays at the downtown Athens Farmers Market from 4-7, Lindsey’s Culinary Market on Prince Avenue from 4-6, or at Oglethorpe Fresh in Lexington from 4-6.

Have a happy and a healthy,

Cedar Grove Farm

Atlanta Locally Grown:  Available for Saturday may 17

Available for Friday may 16
I hope this finds you all doing well. Good news, I didn’t break my ankle, just a real bad sprain. I have lots of bruising and swelling but no breaks. I’ll be in a boot for 2-4 weeks. With that said we have a new date for the pigs. They will be delivered to the processor next Monday. That will shift everything back a few weeks. It will also just add a few more pounds, making for bigger chops and more sausage.

I was able to check on my garden in Danielsville. The potatoes are doing great. They are 12" and taller. I hope to be able to hill them this week. The greens are also doing well this season. They are a bit thinner than I had hoped but got plenty to pick so please order up. I just got my next feed delivery and the bill is large.

We also hope to have peas this week. If we do I’ll bring then to the market on Saturday. They are snow peas. The pods are filling out. Hopefully by Friday so I can pick them for Saturday.
We will see you on Saturday at your selected delivery location.
Thank you for all your support and please remember to share us with a friend,
Brady

Market News

Hello!

Happy Mother’s Day to all! For some it’s a day of celebration, for others a day of remembering. Hopefully the day had some precious moments for you and your family.

The strawberries are in this week and we have a good amount. Despite previous concerns, John’s berries seem to be on a good productive track and we should have a nice crop for a few weeks to come! Please remember these strawberries are not only local, but are always organically grown and therefore a healthy treat for you and your loved ones.

It is the lettuce time of year! We have a great supply this week, and the recipe included is for a strawberry salad dressing, which is a wonderfully different way to use berries with the tender greens we are offering! Along with some good blue or goat cheese from The Bloomy Rind – oh boy are you good to go!

Also Dozen Bakery has her shortcakes available and they are the perfect accompaniment for the strawberries.

In the world of cool news, it was just announced that our very own Wedge Oak Farm will be hosting the Nashville stop of the Outstanding in the Field dinners in October. Their farm will be the venue along with Josh Harbinger from the restaurant Pinewood Social as chef. You can go to the Outstanding in the Field website, http://www.outstandinginthefield.com/event/wedge-oak-farm/ to get tickets!

If you have pre-paid for the Bouquet of the Week, please notice you have your own item to select on the Market page under flowers. You will not be charged when you do this – it will just help Tally to keep track. This is for pre-paid bouquets only. If you have not pre-paid but would like a bouquet, please select the large weekly bouquet for $14.00. Please let Tally know if you have any questions.

We are running low on bags! We have ordered more, but would appreciate any returned that you may have hiding in a closet or trunk!

Once again, thanks so much for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

John and Tallahassee

Market News

Forest Run Farm is offering spinach, mizuna, arugula, baby choy and Asian Greens this week, produced in the Hoop House. They also have small head lettuce in various green varieties.

The herbs look wonderful! Lovage has a celery flavor, and is best first thing in the spring. Chives have arrived in the field.

Vegetable plants are available for planting home gardens—peppers, tomatoes and head lettuce—but other varieties are coming. Note that CSA credit can not be used on plants, so please pay for them with cash or check.

Friday pick up will be 4-6pm at Forest Run Farm in DeForest. Please make alternate arrangements for pick up if needed. CSA members that pick up at Hilldale should arrive between 8 and noon. All Farmstand CSA members can shop at Forest Run Farm’s vendor location at Hilldale Farmers Market: Bring your punchcard. We still recommend pre-ordering so that you get the most variety.

How to use Lovage

  • Cook with lentils- saute a few leaves with onions, add lentils and cook slowly.
  • Chop the leaves and add to cream cheese—use as a stuffing in a chicken breast.
  • Pesto is traditionally made with basil, but can be made with most herbs. I use sorrel and lovage.
  • Lovage, chopped finely, can be used on a pizza topping.
  • Lovage is excellent with fish, such as salmon
  • Chop the leaves in a fresh leaf and herb salad- dress with your favorite dressing.
  • Leek and lovage soup- it sounds good and tastes fantastic- the leeks and lovage really work well together.
