… this and that …

When you ‘shop the Market’, it is similar to strolling through a Traditional Farmers’ Market in that you are ordering your items directly from the Farmer/Grower/Producer. There have been a couple of instances recently of people being unhappy with the product they received. As the Market Manager, I want to ensure that everyone is happy with the quality of the products and I am happy to help if there is an issue. However, since the purchase is directly from the Farmer, it is necessary for you to email or call the Farmer with your concern. You can click the Grower Tab at the top of the page and get the Farmer contact information by viewing the individual detail. Please email the Farmer and copy me, or call the Farmer and let me know, so that I am ‘in the loop’. Our Farmers work hard to bring you ‘the best of the best’ and they want to know if something is less than expected. Refunds and/or replacements are at the discretion of the Farmer.

Sometimes items are ordered from one Farmer and when I run the final reports, I see that an item has been canceled. In an effort to ensure that you get what you are expecting, I will check with another Farmer to see if they have the same item. I then ‘order’ the item for you and you are given the option at Market pickup to ‘replace’ the original item with the same or similar item from another Farmer. This is not a typical ‘service’ of any other Locally Grown Market, but is done in an effort to make sure you are not ‘left in a lurch’ in not getting what you have ordered. It is not always possible to replace items, but please know that I do my best.

After Church, The Black Lab and I will be spending some time in the Garden and mowing the yard. The cooler weather these last few days has certainly been a blessing! I hope that you all enjoyed time with family and friends over this 4th of July Holiday weekend! I certainly did!

I wish you all a happy day and a wonderful week!

I hope everyone had a safe Fourth of July. The Market is back open this morning with some vendors on vacation and others returning. Wild Flours returns this week and will be back on their every other week schedule. Carol’s Vibration Cooking, Erdmann Farm, and Casa Segovia-Paz are on vacation this week only.

Reminder for Nashville customers:
There will be no deliveries this week, July 10.

Rocky Glade Farm brings back local honey as well as their garlic and purple sun potatoes.

Prospect Hill Farm returns this summer with his blueberries.

There are plenty of squash and zucchini available from Flying S Farm, Rainbow Hill Farm and White city Produce and Greenhouse.

We have a new product from JENuine Health by Chef Jenny. A note from Jenny:

Munchy Mocking Bird Mix

This snack sets itself apart from the others because it is not sweet. It is a crunchy mix of seeds, gluten-free grains, and minced onions that have been toasted in olive oil and then combined with garlic and spices. If you are a garlic bread fan, you are sure to love this mix.

Try it on:

Potatoes
Veggies (broccoli, kale, swiss chard)
Hummus
Pasta salads

Tomatoes & Mozzarella

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!

Recipes

Please, share your recipes with us on the Recipes tab. We’d all love to know how you use your Stones River Market products, so we can try it too! I am taking a break from recipes this week. If you have created a dish and want to share with everyone, please send it to me.

Lin Richmond shared this recipe with us and has used it regularly for her cherry tomatoes.

Red, White, & Blue Salad

INGREDIENTS
1 pint cherry tomatoes, whether red, orange, yellow or a combination, stemmed
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon cane sugar or maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon fine-grain sea salt, plus more to taste

DIRECTIONS
1. To make the roasted cherry tomatoes, preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C). Adjust the oven rack to the top third of the oven.
2. Slice the tomatoes in half and place them on a rimmed baking sheet.
3. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, sugar or maple syrup, and a scant 1/2 teaspoon salt. Pour the mixture over the tomatoes and gently toss until well coated. Arrange the tomatoes in a single layer, cut-side up, and roast, without stirring, until the tomatoes shrink a bit and start to caramelize around the edges, 45 to 60 minutes.
4. Nibble the roasted cherry tomatoes straight off the baking sheet. Or, if you aren’t using them immediately, let them cool and then scrape them into a clean glass jar along with any olive oil that was left in the baking dish or sheet.
Sometimes I top off the jar with an added splash of olive oil. The tomatoes will keep for about 1 week in the refrigerator.

I thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!

Champaign, OH:  Let Your Love Flow

Just let your love flow like a mountain stream…
And let your love grow with the smallest of dreams…
And let your love show and you’ll know what I mean.. It’s the season..
(Bellamy Brothers – Let Your Love Flow)

Here we are, again, on a Sunday, with my usual Sunday rambling in this Sunday Weblog. I have grown to love this little Sunday morning time when I connect with you, reflect with you, and share with you.

Today, is just all about the market love. The word continues to get out, the market continues to grow, and it seems like a new vendor is being accepted into the market, on a weekly basis.

When I am out at the physical markets that I vend or in my Cosmic shop, I continue to spread the word about this wonderful market. As I talk about and explain about it, the general interest grows and I can see excitement in the person’s eyes. They thank me for the cards, for the explanation, and with that, we seem to gaining new customers, each week, as well. Because it’s not just me out there spreading the word, it’s all of you…customers and vendors, both. We all feel the love, the pride, the excitement! We know we have an amazing opportunity to bring our amazing products to the masses, right here, in our little local corner of love.

So, continue to go out, let your love flow and let it show for this market. Showing the love is what it’s all about. Bringing the best of the best is what it’s all about. Generating the never ending excitement is what it’s all about.

As you wind down from this holiday weekend, think about showing both the market and yourself a bit of love. Get the week started by placing your weekly orders so you don’t have to think about it, the rest of the week. All you have to do is come to Thursday’s pick up, and we hand you the goodness to go!

Have a lovely end to the holiday…we look forward to working for you, this week!

Peace and Love,
Cosmic Pam

I am writing to you from my Aunt Sharon Dean’s dining room table in Peachtree, North Carolina, just outside of Murphy. I don’t know how the weather has been at home, but here in western Carolina, it is sublime! Today was sunny and warm – but not too hot – with low humidity and a stunningly clear cobalt sky. The low temperature will dip into the mid-50s overnight, and more of the same is predicted for the next few days.

This evening, 17 family members and I sat down for an alfresco supper. Our menu consisted of grilled sweet corn, grilled eggplant (thanks Elise!), bruschetta made with heirloom tomatoes, freshly made hand-grated coleslaw, Mom’s potato salad (best in the whole world!), platters of sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, and sweet onions, Aunt Sharon’s homemade chili, my sister Teresa’s pickled cauliflower, and grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. We concluded our meal with ice cold watermelon and an assortment of pies: blueberry, cherry, apple, and bourbon pecan. Needless to say, we are all stuffed! What a pleasure today has been preparing our feast while visiting with my favorite kin!

Here is a quick and easy way to use up an abundance of tomatoes: make bruschetta. Dice several tomatoes; add a clove or two of minced fresh garlic, a splash of balsamic vinegar, and a pinch or two of salt. Kosher or sea salt, if you have some, makes this dish especially tasty. Finish with a chiffonade of basil. To chiffonade basil, take several large leaves off the stems, stack them one on top of each other, and roll up tightly along a long side. Make very thin parallel cuts until all of the basil has been cut. You should have a pile of deliciously fragrant basil “ribbons” when you finish. Scoop it all up and add it to the tomatoes. Stir gently, taste, and add more garlic, basil, or salt to suit your taste. Cover and let sit at room temperature for an hour or two – if you can wait that long! Slice a baguette or loaf of Italian bread on the bias, brush with olive oil, and grill until the bread is toasted and golden, turning once to make sure to toast the other side. Be careful and check the bread frequently so that you don’t make burnt toast! Top the grilled bread with a tablespoon or two of the tomato-garlic-basil mixture and enjoy!

As always, we thank our customers and farmers for your commitment to our Market. We appreciate your support of the buy-local movement, and we’ll see you on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly

Siloam Springs, AR:  Onliine Market is Open!

We have had such beautiful weather! The farmers have been bringing an abundance of produce to market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Tomatoes are ripe, fresh herbs are becoming more plentiful, eggplant and okra have made their debut. Green beans, new potatoes, carrots, and cucumbers are abundant! If you like to preserve fresh produce visit with the farmers about buying in large quantities. We have visited the farms and know they have plenty for canning!

The market continues to offer pastured poultry, beef and pork through two vendors – R Family Farm and J.D. Hudson Farm.

There are plenty of great baked goods, jams and jellies, hand made soaps, home made cleaning supplies and hand crafted items.

Double Dollars are here and you can visit the market booth to get matching money for EBT purchases and Sr. Vouchers.

Thank you for continuing to support the Siloam Springs Farmers Market at our physical market and through the online market!
