ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market is Open!

Good Morning Marketgoers,

Thunderstorms and tomatoes, humidity and okra, burning heat and spicy peppers; if you weren’t already aware, Summer is officially here. That’s exciting news for us local-food lovers, as each week the market expands with new flavors and varieties, and we get to truly taste nature’s bounty. The market is open and getting yummier by the day. New offerings include…

  • Can you say Hardin Farms’ CANTALOUPE?!?!? Excuse my obvious excitement, but these are quite literally my favorite melons on the planet. Snag a melon and some of their peaches & cream sweet corn and taste why the Hardins are some of our favorite farmers around.
  • Fresh okra is back from Barnhill Orchards. I was raised a Yankee and never heard of okra until I moved down here. I was first taught that it was only for frying, which, while absolutely delicious, doesn’t quite compare to stewing it with tomatoes, in my humble opinion.
  • Kohlrabi kraut from Garden Works. This delicious, nutritious, and all-local fermented condiment goes great on grilled meats and morning omelettes.
  • Cajun spiced mixed nuts from Maison Terre. Created by Maison Terre staff and Food Club Coordinator Karl Heinbockel as a birthday gift for his sister, I’ve tasted these nuts and they are nothing short of addictive!

A few years ago it was discovered that one of our growers, Petit Jean Meats, was mislabeling out-of-state products as their own. When caught, they were banned from the market and got in a bit of legal trouble. There’s currently a pending court case against Petit Jean Meats and they’re looking for folks that bought their products because they thought they were local in 2010 and 2011. If you bought Petit Jean Meats in that timeframe and are interested in giving a statement, e-mail it to prosecutor contact Jeff Wieners at jeff.wieners@fsis.usda.gov.

Thanks for supporting local!

MARKET NEWS
Lisa has bug repellent listed this week, just in time for those holiday outdoor activities: Fresh & Local — > Natural Pest Control — > Mosquito Repellant. Here is the description: Homemade using juices, extracts, and the Beauty Berry Plant in an Rubbing alcohol base to create the perfect body spray. Give it quick shake before spraying, and you may spray your hands and wipe your neck and face too. Reapply as needed. Mosquitoes may land on you, but will not like the taste of you. Another tip for you: Eat as many greens as possible, Mosquitoes are not vegetarians. lol… You will need an extra one to share with others when they learn you have the secret. Enjoy the outdoors again.

Also, Fred has lots of hamburger listed for your cook-outs next week-end.

Things I always buy through market and never at the store: hamburger, eggs, milk and butter – so very lucky to have healthy, local alternatives!

See you Tuesday!

Green Fork Farmers Market:  Weekly product list

Dear Green Fork Farmers Market customers,

Don’t forget to place your order from now until Tuesday at noon for pickup at Wednesday’s market. It’s a perfect time to get what you need for your 4th of July celebrations this week! Vegetables and meats for the grill, herbs for perfect seasonings, eggs for deviled eggs or desserts, and ready-made accompaniments. Here are the details:

NEW this week—Beyond Organics has the first zucchini of the year. You know all the jokes about having too much of it, but remember that everything at Green Fork Farmers Market is grown without chemical pesticides, and the squash might not last long due to pest pressures this summer. So, get your fill while you can.

Figgieville has a new shipment of organically grown olives directly from the grower in California. All of your favorite varieties are available this week: Kalamatas, green and purple Sevillanos, and Lucques. They also have a sampler pack available so you can try them all. Don’t forget to try this year’s Kalamata olive oil too. It’s amazing!

Also available this week—potatoes, fresh and dried Shiitake mushrooms and mushroom powder, onions, green onions, garlic, kale, lots of fresh herbs, chicken eggs, duck eggs, lamb, pork, beef, chicken, duck, stock/soup bones, botanical bath and beauty products, lacto-fermented sauerkraut, salsa, pet food, dog bones, several varieties of baby chicks for sale, and baby chicks for rent.

We will bring additional items to sell at our tables at the market as they become available each week, so make sure you take a quick look when you pick up to see if you want to add anything to your order. For example, last week we had green beans and cured garlic for sale at the market that weren’t listed for pre-order online. If you aren’t able to place an order, you can always stop by to shop at our farmers’ tables as well.

We look forward to helping you get ready for your gatherings with friends and family this week. Go ahead and place your order, and we’ll see you on Wednesday!

The Wednesday Market:  Red, White, and Blue for The Fourth; The Market is Open!

Good evening to The Wednesday Market community. We hope you are having a great weekend!

The Wednesday Market is open. Please place your orders by 10 p.m. on Monday. Orders are ready for pick up on Wednesday between 3 and 6 p.m. Be sure to check the website for all of this week’s product listings. Here is the link: http://wednesdaymarket.locallygrown.net/market

As we prepare to turn the calendar page from June to July, many of us are packing up to leave town for a long holiday weekend over the Fourth of July. And if we aren’t leaving, then we are at least contemplating how to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. Most of our celebrations will include a cook-out or a meal. What’s on your menu?

At the Walter house, we like to prepare a grilled supper for the Fourth. Joe will put a brisket in the smoker, and I’ll prepare vegetable skewers. We like grilled onion, squash, zucchini, mushrooms, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes.

Lifestyle magazines are full of glossy photographs of recipes featuring red, white, and blue fruits and vegetables to carry out a patriotic party theme. How about watermelon and tomato salad, potato salad, or blueberry and strawberry trifle? Flag cake, anyone? Or, are hamburgers and hot dogs more your style? Just Google the Internet for “Fourth of July Foods” and you’ll find a plethora of ideas to inspire you.

Whatever strikes your fancy, you are sure to find many of the items you need for your Fourth of July party right here at The Wednesday Market. We have blueberries – that’s for sure! And potatoes for potato salad. And Angel Food Cake and Sour Cream Pound Cake for trifle. And wonderfully rich cream to whip or turn into ice cream. And, the list of possibilities goes on and on!

Thank you for supporting locally grown agriculture and for choosing to buy locally. We’ll see you on Wednesday.

Thanks,

Beverly

———————————————————-
THANK YOU ALL!
A hearty Thank You to everyone who participated in our latest Taste of the Market. This is such a great way to meet our local providers up close and personal, to ask questions, to offer suggestions/requests, and to learn first hand about about what our growers/artisans do and how they do it. AND to get samples!!

Also a HUGE THANK YOU to Leslie Lytle who worked tirelessly organizing the Art at the Market and who provided the mandolin music for us. Those of you who know Leslie know she is a workhorse with seemingly boundless energy and ideas, as well as a knack for making things happen. This event was so successful, the artists are thinking about doing another one later! Way to go, Leslie!

Thank you also to State Representative David Alexander for carving out some time from his busy life to attend the market and to speak to folks.

Last, but certainly not least, thank you to the great people at the Sewanee Time Bank for giving generously of their time to inform folks about the Time Bank and sign up volunteers. This is an important community resource that can help us all!

What a great day! It makes us realize once again how fortunate we all are to live in such a beautiful and thriving mountain community!
