Dothan, Alabama:  2012 Market at Dothan Nurseries

http://marketatdothan.locallygrown.net

Thank you all for making 2012 a great year for the Market! Adding our online market has been so exciting and brought so many new, wonderful friends into our lives! We are truly blessed by knowing each of you! All of this would not be possible without JD, Faith, Renee and the Staff at Dothan Nurseries opening up their beautiful place as well as their big hearts to welcome us with open arms every Friday!
After Friday, December 14th, we will take a break to celebrate the holidays. The Online Market will resume Sunday, January 6th with online ordering and pickup on Friday, January 11th in “the potting shed” at Dothan Nurseries from 9:00 am- 11:00 am. Until then, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Gratefully,
Susan and Amanda

Conway, AR:  Opening Bell

Greetings Conway Locally Grown Community,

A big congratulations to Cody Hopkins and Andrea Todt for the birth of their second child, this time a baby girl!

My farming education began in 2009 when I interned with Cody and Andrea at Falling Sky Farm, and it has been an invaluable experience for me to work alongside them while their family and business grows. Watching a few people with progressive ideas and lots of determination turn their visions into a successful business has been really exciting for me, but also intimidating. It’s exciting because I see sustainable farming as a way to have a positive impact on the landscape and culture of Arkansas. The community networks, local economies, and environmental ethics that have been built around the food scene in Arkansas over the past several years are proof of that positive impact. It’s intimidating however, because I have seen and, to some degree, felt, the emotional stress and physical strain of building a socially and/or environmentally responsible business in an economy that provides little incentive for such responsibility. It baffles me sometimes how farmers like Cody and Andrea are able to cultivate a forward-thinking business plan, raise a healthy and happy family, and train wanna-be’s like me all at the same time.

The independent, socially responsible, and environmentally conscious business owners that comprise our network of growers are truly a force for good and an inspiration for the next generation of farmers and entrepreneurs. Let’s not overlook their hard work and sacrifices, and let’s unwaveringly support their efforts and our common goal of better food and a better life.

The market is now open. Go to conway.locallygrown.net/market to place your order. Remember to hit the checkout button when you’re finished and you will receive a confirmation email once your order has been placed.

Have a great day!

MAGICALHOLIDAY PARTY
That’s what everyone kept calling it. Thanks to all who came and shared food and fellowship under the stars. A pleasant relaxing time was had by all in the backyard garden where Nathan orchestrated major mood lighting and Rita & Denise serenaded us all with seredipitous song and lovely duets. Wonderful potluck fare was shared by all. If you left anything at the party, please email us and we’ll deliver it with your next order. How’s that for service?

LIKE CHOCOLATE?
This time of year is especially perfect for enjoying luxurious flavors. Be sure to include Flour Free Cakes from GateauOChocolat on your Holiday Menu. Chef Roux’s Gluten Free Chocolate Cake is made for you in St. Petersburg all year round for all occasions. This cake is beautiful to present at parties! And don’t miss TWO different types of hot chocolate offered by Savory Spice Shop. If you cannot run downtown to Joan and Paul’s Shop, it is now conveniently available on our online Market.

HEALING REMEDIES
A new category on our Market products. Scroll down the list to “R” for Remedies. Imperial Garden’s Jennifer Gilman is now filling orders for natural remedies especially geared for cold and flu relief.

ABUNDANCE AND VARIETY OF PRODUCE
We hope to connect with a local, chemical-free or organic grower who can supplement the fabulous produce we obtain from the small urban farms of St. Petersburg. Until this manifests, we will not have the abundance and variety of produce that was previously available when Worden Farm was on board. All this makes it even more important for our customers to support the efforts of our small urban farmers who continue to grow in number. Your financial support encourages our small urban Growers to expand in ways that are feasible to help meet the growing demand we have for locally grown, chemical-free produce. We are a small but mighty Market! Sincere thanks to all who continue to support us!

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CUSTOMERS! Once you have submitted your order, if in doubt about what you owe, you can always confirm what you have been charged for by checking your account history and viewing your most current invoice. Instructions on how to do that are on our Q&A page under the question entitled Since you don’t provide an invoice with delivery, how do I know what I owe? . Also, since your vegetables are picked fresh within 24 hours of delivery, they should be lasting for WEEKS in your refrigerator. When you accept delivery, please take a few minutes to inspect your order to protect your vegetables from unnecessary spoilage. Recipes

Escarole Pasta Carbonara
This is absolutely delicious!
Ingredients
2 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves minced garlic
1 head escarole, washed and cut into medium sized pieces
1 egg
½ package whole grain spaghetti
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions
In a pan, combine olive oil and garlic, and let simmer over medium heat for a few minutes.
Add chopped escarole to the oil and garlic mixture, cooking over low-medium heat until tender (about 10 minutes).
Meanwhile, bring water to a boil and add pasta.
Cook until al dente, drain and immediately crack the egg into pasta. The egg gets cooked by the pasta.
Add escarole to the pasta mixture, and top with Parmesan cheese.
Mix it all together, serve, and ENJOY!
